How to check backlinks and Why backlinks are important?

The question is How you can identify who is linking to your site?

You may already know that having peoples linked to your site is a very important factor for major search engines. This is because a link is a citation or a formal vote for a website. Simply having lots of people linking to you however is not enough. How many people link to your website and how good and relevant the sites are is important factors for search engines. And this can have a big impact on your sites ranking.

Here are two easy ways to check how many people or Websites link to you. It’s possible to check the backlinks in more than one way.

First, let’s look at Google. Up until two years ago, Google was the first choice for webmasters to get backlink information to see who links to them. Let’s try your site. Now in Google, you need to type “link:” and then the web address and that is “link:http://www.yoursite.com” – if yours is a well known site you will see how many sites linking to you and the list of results. If yours is not that well-known try apple.com and you will find that thousands of sites (approximately more than 35000) are linking to apple.com.

Let’s try Yahoo. On yahoo, to get link information type “linkdomain:” and then the web address - that is “linkdomain:www.yoursite.com” and search. If yours is not a well-known one, try apple.com here too and you will see approximately more than 24,000,000 links pointing to apple.com. This is actually more than that was showing in google.com.

So, if we conclude on Yahoo, we get more detailed list about backlink information than Google.

In summary - it’s important to have good search engine rankings, but it’s not all about volume. The quality of links matters too. Find out how many people link to your website.

Hi, thank you for the advice, I am struggling to get my site up as well too. I am wondering how do you go about getting backlinks on PR9 sites and also making checkbacks to ping back to your site? My site is San Luis Obispo cleaning services and I certainly appreciate your help with your information.

Also do you recommend Digg other than Google?

    Thanks
    Scott
